Interviewing Workshop
Few decisions in any organization are more critical than the "people" decisions. Proper selection, placement, and training of personnel are keys to organizational effectiveness. The more relevant information you have in making
a decision, the more sound that decision is likely to be.
The individual interview is one of the most widely used selection techniques in business today.
It is also a technique that is often subject to misunderstanding, misapplication and misinterpretation, by both beginners and experienced professionals.
PCI offers a rational approach to the selection decision viewing the interview as a logical problem solving technique. Getting a "feel" for an applicant is not enough. Our workshop provides systematic guidelines for preparing to interview. We will show you how to understand practical job requirements and developing an appropriate interview strategy; conduct the interview, with questions designed to obtain maximum information with maximum efficiency; and make the hiring decision, based on logical interpretation of the information obtained.
Program Goals
The workshop is designed to help participants develop a more goal-oriented approach in their own individual styles of interviewing. Content is suitable both for beginners in selection and (as an in-depth refresher) for those already active in the field.
Our Goals in the Program are these:
- To help participants understand the role and the limitations of the interview in personnel decision-making.
- To enable participants to enter each interview situation fully and properly prepared.
- To help participants develop a sensible strategy, with specific job-related questions, for each interview.
- To assist participants in making the most of the face-to-face interaction with each interviewee, through effective questioning, listening, and observation techniques
- To alert participants to the legal constraints in selection interviewing, and to enable them to function comfortably and effectively within those constraints.
- To help participants present job information in a meaningful way to an applicant, to enable him/her to make a sound job decision.
- To provide guidelines for the logical use of interview information in selection decision-making.
- Nature of the Program
The following are important features of the selection interviewing workshop:
- In addition to presentations by PCI program leaders, there is extensive reliance on involvement of all participants through group discussion, role play and other techniques. The emphasis is on practical application of principles and techniques being taught; roughly a quarter of the training time is devoted to practice interviews and feedback.
- The class format is flexible to allow appropriate time for inclusion of topics of particular interest to participants. Although all the topics outlined below will be covered, the program leader will maintain sufficient flexibility to deal with a particular group's needs.
